In a world full of advertising noise, standing out without sounding like a pushy salesperson is so important.
We all want to grow our businesses, but we’re also keenly aware that nobody likes being “sold to”. So, how do you effectively market your services without coming across as spammy?
Here are my top 10 ways to build genuine connections and let your expertise shine—while staying true to yourself.
1. Focus on Helping, Not Selling
Instead of getting straight into your offers, share tips, advice, and insights instead, that genuinely help. By positioning yourself as someone who can solve real problems, you establish yourself as a trustworthy expert. Helping, rather than selling, shifts your energy and keeps interactions authentic.
2. Share Valuable Insights Regularly
Take it a step further and provide value consistently. Sharing useful, actionable content shows your audience that you’re committed to their success. You’re not just here to sell; you’re here to support, and that makes all the difference.
3. Tell Real, Relatable Stories
Stories create connection. Share personal experiences that mirror your clients’ journeys or struggles. For example, in my own work, I’ve faced the energetic blocks that held me back despite doing all the “right” actions. Sharing how I overcame that helps my audience see themselves in my journey and builds trust.
4. Offer Practical Solutions to Actual Problems
If you’ve encountered a challenge, chances are your audience has too. Whether it’s a how-to video on email whitelisting or advice on batching content creation (like I have done or am working on), provide solutions that meet them where they are. This helps position you as a valuable resource, which clients will remember.
5. Show Up Authentically, Warts and All
Perfection can feel unapproachable. Be yourself—warts, ponytails, and all! When people see your true personality, they’re more likely to connect with you, building a sense of familiarity and trust that scripted sales talk could never achieve.
6. Provide Free Resources to Build Trust
Build trust by offering free resources that give real value. This could be tips, small workshops, or useful downloads. Once people see that you’re there to help, they’ll keep coming back and may even opt for your paid services when the time is right.
7. Engage in Conversations, Not Pitches
Focus on building relationships. When you connect with people in an authentic way—sharing a funny story, a slice of life, or a “positive potato” moment—you open the door to meaningful interactions. It’s this engagement that will keep your brand top of mind.
8. Share Client Success Stories
Showcase what you’ve achieved with others. Testimonials and case studies are powerful ways to build credibility, offering proof that your services deliver real results. Just make sure you have permission, or keep things anonymous to respect client privacy.
9. Create Content That Educates, Entertains, or Inspires
Strive to make your content helpful, funny, or uplifting. Aim to either educate, inspire, or entertain so that people genuinely want to interact with your brand. If your content serves them, they’ll come back again and again.
10. Trust That Your Ideal Clients Will Find You
Stay authentic, and the right clients will be drawn to you naturally. When you are unapologetically yourself, you’ll attract those aligned with your message, leading to harmonious business relationships and enjoyable work.
So, stay true, show up fully, and focus on serving your audience. When you do, the rest will fall into place.
